Photography jobs at summer camps are some of the most rewarding seasonal roles for working photographers, photography students, and skilled hobbyists. Whether you’re shooting daily activities for parent platforms at traditional sleepaway camps or running full photography electives at large co-ed residential camps, this role blends storytelling with mentorship in a uniquely creative summer environment.
As a photography staffer at an overnight camp, you’ll shoot across the day, edit and publish daily, and often teach a camper photography elective covering composition, exposure, lighting, and basic editing. You’ll manage studio space, computers, and shared cameras while contributing to slideshows and yearbook content. Many co-ed residential camps invest in robust photography programs that span shooting, teaching, and parent communication throughout the summer.
What does a photography staffer at summer camp do?
You’ll shoot daily activities, edit and upload images, and often teach a camper photography elective. Most sleepaway camps with photography programs include daily content production throughout the summer camp season.
What background works best for photography jobs at sleepaway camps?
Photography degrees, working pro experience, and strong portfolios with kids, sports, or events all stand out. Working photographers, MFA students, and college photography students are great fits at residential camps.
Do photography staff teach campers?
Often yes. Many co-ed residential camps offer photography as a camper elective alongside the parent-facing photo program, giving staff a chance to mentor young photographers throughout the summer at the sleepaway camp.
What does the pay look like for photography jobs at summer camps?
Pay is competitive and commensurate with experience and portfolio. Sleepaway camps include room, board, and laundry alongside salary, which adds meaningful value to the overall summer camp package beyond the base figure.
Do photographers bring their own gear?
It varies. Many overnight camps provide cameras and editing laptops; smaller residential camps may ask staff to bring personal kits. Always confirm gear expectations and insurance for personal equipment during your interview.
Are you looking for a once in a lifetime summer experience?
At Timber Lake, we take the job of coaching and caring for children seriously. We’re looking for top-quality summer camp counselors and specialty staff who will take this job as seriously as we do.
