Programming Jobs at Summer Camps
Programming jobs at summer camps are some of the most exciting STEAM roles for working developers, CS students, and self-taught engineers who love mentoring young coders. From traditional sleepaway camps adding code electives to specialty tech residential camps running full development tracks, programming instructors find rich teaching environments where they can guide campers through project-based learning across multiple languages.
As a programming instructor at an overnight camp, you’ll teach Python, JavaScript, HTML/CSS, Scratch, or other languages while supporting camper projects across game dev, web apps, robotics, and AI. You’ll run end-of-session showcases, troubleshoot environments, and partner with robotics, game design, and 3-D design staff on integrated STEAM programs. Many co-ed residential camps run robust programming curricula that span beginner to advanced tracks, giving instructors plenty of variety throughout the summer.
What does a programming instructor at summer camp do?You’ll teach languages and code concepts through project-based lessons, support camper builds, and run showcases. Most sleepaway camps with programming run daily classes throughout the summer camp season.
What languages are common at summer camp programming programs?Scratch, Python, JavaScript, and HTML/CSS are widely used at residential camps. Specialty tech camps often add Java, C++, Unity (C#), Roblox Studio (Lua), and beginner AI/ML tools. Curriculum varies by camper age.
Do I need a CS degree to teach programming at camp?A degree isn’t required, but CS, math, or engineering backgrounds are highly valued. CS students, working developers, bootcamp grads, and self-taught engineers all fit naturally at overnight camps with strong programming programs.
What does the pay look like for programming jobs at summer camps?Pay is competitive and commensurate with experience and technical depth. Sleepaway camps include room, board, and laundry alongside salary, which makes the overall summer camp package noticeably more valuable than the base figure.
Is programming usually combined with other STEAM roles?Often yes. Many co-ed residential camps blend programming with robotics, game design, 3-D design, and AI under unified STEAM programs. Multi-discipline tech instructors are especially valued at sleepaway camps.
