Sports Jobs at Summer Camps
Sports jobs at summer camps are some of the most in-demand seasonal roles in the country. From traditional sleepaway camps offering daily multi-sport rotations to specialty residential sports camps featuring elite coaches, sports staff power the energy of every season. Whether you’re a college athlete, club coach, PE teacher, or recreational sports leader, summer camp sports work offers a great way to mentor young athletes and develop coaching chops.
As a sports staffer at an overnight camp, you’ll teach skills, run drills, organize tournaments, referee games, and support major athletic events like color war and Olympics days. You’ll often coach across multiple disciplines while supporting cabin life and broader camper community. Many co-ed residential camps build full-summer programming around inter-camp leagues, color war, and championship events, giving sports staff a packed and rewarding schedule.
What does a sports staffer do at a summer camp? You’ll teach skills, run drills, organize tournaments, referee games, and support major athletic events. Most sleepaway camps include sports in daily rotations throughout the summer camp season.
What background works best for sports jobs at sleepaway camps?Collegiate playing experience, high school coaching, PE teaching, or strong recreational coaching backgrounds are all great fits. Multi-sport competence is especially valuable at residential camps with broad athletic programs.
Do I need to specialize in one sport? Not necessarily. Many co-ed residential camps prefer multi-sport coaches who can teach soccer, basketball, lacrosse, baseball, and more. Specialists are also welcome, especially at sports-focused sleepaway camps.
What does the pay look like for sports jobs at summer camps?Pay is competitive and commensurate with experience and credentials. Sleepaway camps include room, board, and laundry alongside salary, which adds meaningful value to the overall summer camp package beyond the base figure.
Can international athletes work in sports roles at camp?Yes — many co-ed sleepaway camps hire international sports staff through J-1 programs like Camp America, CCUSA, and Camp Leaders. International coaches and athletes work at residential camps every summer.
