Archery Jobs at Summer Camps Across the USA
Archery jobs at summer camps are a classic camp staple — and one of the most popular electives campers sign up for season after season. From traditional Olympic-style target shooting to 3D field courses and themed activities inspired by archery legends, archery instructors play a key role in introducing campers to a sport that builds focus, discipline, and confidence. Sleepaway camps, day camps, and co-ed residential camps all rely on certified archery staff to lead safe, engaging programs.
As an archery instructor at an overnight camp, you’ll teach campers proper stance, anchor points, release form, and range safety. You’ll manage equipment, inspect bows and arrows for damage, and run group sessions across multiple age groups. Many residential camps offer progression-based programs where campers earn skill badges or work toward USA Archery rankings, giving you the chance to mentor athletes through real measurable growth across the summer.
What does an archery instructor at summer camp do?An archery instructor teaches proper shooting form, range safety, and equipment care, leading group lessons across multiple age groups. You’ll inspect gear, manage the range, and often run skill-based progression programs throughout the summer camp season.
What certifications do I need for archery jobs at sleepaway camps?USA Archery Level 1 or Level 2 Instructor certification is the most commonly required credential. Some camps accept ACA Archery certification or will host on-site certification courses during staff training so you arrive ready to teach.
What equipment do summer camps typically use? Most overnight camps use recurve bows in a range of draw weights, with arrows sized to camper height. Some specialty residential camps also offer compound bows, 3D animal targets, and field archery setups. Camps generally provide all equipment.
What does the pay look like for archery instructors at camp?Pay is competitive and commensurate with certifications and experience. Overnight and sleepaway camps include room, board, and laundry in addition to salary, making the total summer camp package meaningfully more valuable than the base salary alone.
Is archery a good fit for someone new to camp work?Yes — archery is a perfect entry point for outdoor-minded instructors. The skill set is teachable, the activity is universally loved by campers, and many co-ed camps will help you get USA Archery certified if you’re new to the discipline.

Our extensive activity program at Birchmont is run by an incredible team of coaches, athletes, and artists. Depending on the area, our specialists will either run a program on their own or as part of a team of instructors – helping the campers to learn new skills, have fun and develop their confidence and ability in particular areas. Our specialists also play an important role with their assigned group, assisting as general counselors when not running their own activity area. This role is suited to someone with expertise or experience in a particular activity – previous coaching or teaching experience is preferred, but our Area Heads and Athletic Director are on hand to ‘teach the teachers’, and help talented athletes and specialists develop their own delivery style – so enthusiastic amateurs are welcome also! Current specialty areas which we are recruiting for include: Archery, Arts and Crafts, Baseball/Softball, Basketball, Fitness/Personal Training, Mountain Biking, Games (Physical Education), Performing Arts & Music, High Ropes, Horseback Riding, Tennis, and Soccer. Our Activity Specialists typically will spend about half their day delivering their activity area, and the other half of the day acting as General Counselors, so they get to have the full camp experience, while honing and sharing their skills in a particular program area. These roles are suited to current college students or graduates with a passion for their chosen activity.
