Swimming Jobs at Summer Camps in the USA
Swimming jobs at summer camps are some of the most essential and rewarding waterfront roles you can find. From traditional sleepaway camps with daily swim lessons at the lake to specialty waterfront residential camps offering serious competitive swim training, swim staff are central to camper care, safety, and skill development across every summer. Whether you’re a lifeguard, swim coach, or working WSI, summer camp swimming offers meaningful seasonal work in a tight-knit community.
As a swim instructor at an overnight camp, you’ll teach swim strokes, water safety, and basic rescue techniques while running daily lessons across age and skill levels. You’ll often pull lifeguard shifts, support free swim, and coach competitive swimmers preparing for swim meets. Many co-ed residential camps run robust swim programs that span instruction, racing, and lifeguarding under unified waterfront leadership throughout the summer.
What does a swim instructor at summer camp do?You’ll teach swim strokes, water safety, and basic rescue while running daily lessons and supporting lifeguard rotations. Most sleepaway camps include swim in daily waterfront rotations throughout the summer camp season.
What certifications do swim staff need at sleepaway camps?Current ARC Lifeguard certification with waterfront or deep water endorsements is standard. WSI (Water Safety Instructor) is highly valued for swim instructors. CPR/AED/First Aid is included in lifeguard credentials at residential camps.
Do summer camps offer competitive swim programs?Specialty waterfront residential camps often run competitive swim teams with meets against nearby camps. Traditional sleepaway camps typically offer instructional swim only. Confirm program scope during your interview.
What does the pay look like for swim jobs at summer camps?Pay is competitive and commensurate with experience and certifications. Overnight camps include room, board, and laundry alongside salary, which adds meaningful value to the overall summer camp package beyond the base figure.
Can international staff work in swim roles at summer camps?Yes — many residential camps hire international swim instructors through J-1 programs like Camp America, CCUSA, and Camp Leaders. International swim certifications are often accepted at sleepaway camps when verified.

Our Waterfront program is a core element of the Birchmont experience, with our campers taking part in activities both on and in our beautiful, private lake twice a day. Our waterfront team is led by two Directors with over 80 years of combined experience in leadership at Birchmont – and under their guidance our team of 18 lifeguards deliver a varied and engaging program of instructional swim and watersports, including waterskiing, wakeboarding, sailing, tubing, kayaking, canoeing and stand-up paddleboarding. All of our lifeguards will be supported through their New Hampshire Boat License test, and will have opportunities to lead and instruct across our activity areas.
