Basketball jobs at summer camps are a perfect match for coaches, college players, and high school basketball stars who want to spend the summer running clinics, leading drills, and mentoring young athletes. From traditional sleepaway camps with full-court games each afternoon to elite specialty basketball academies that draw players from across the country, hoops is a cornerstone of camp athletics nationwide.
As a basketball coach at an overnight camp, you’ll teach fundamentals — shooting form, ball handling, defense, passing — and run drills, scrimmages, and inter-camp games. You’ll also help coordinate tournaments and championship events as part of color war or all-camp athletics days. Many co-ed and residential camps integrate basketball into broader athletics programs, while dedicated basketball camps run specialized weekly programs with film review, skill assessments, and college-level coaching. If you love the game and love kids, this is one of the best summer jobs around.
What does a basketball coach at summer camp do?
You’ll teach shooting, dribbling, passing, and defense, run drills and scrimmages, and coach in intra-camp and inter-camp games. Most overnight camps include basketball in their daily athletics rotation throughout the summer camp season.
What background works best for basketball jobs at sleepaway camps?
College, high school, or competitive AAU playing experience is ideal, along with prior coaching experience at any level. Specialty basketball academies often prefer coaches with Division I, II, or III collegiate playing or coaching backgrounds.
Do summer camps provide all the basketball equipment?
Yes — overnight camps typically provide balls, hoops, court markings, and training equipment. You’ll usually need your own basketball shoes, athletic clothing, and a whistle. Specialty residential camps often have additional advanced training tools available.
What does the pay look like for basketball coaches at camp?
Pay is competitive and commensurate with experience and coaching credentials. Sleepaway camps include room, board, and laundry alongside salary, which significantly increases the value of the overall summer camp package.
Can current college basketball players coach at summer camps?
Yes — many co-ed sleepaway camps actively recruit current college players. Just make sure to check NIL and NCAA compliance rules with your athletic department before accepting any paid summer camp coaching position.
