Sound and Lighting Tech Jobs at Summer Camps
Sound and lighting tech jobs at summer camps are a perfect fit for theater tech crew, AV pros, and live event engineers who love powering live performance from the booth. From traditional sleepaway camps with weekly cabarets and theme nights to specialty performing arts residential camps mounting full musicals each session, sound and lighting techs handle some of the most magical behind-the-scenes work of every summer at camp.
As a sound and lighting tech at an overnight camp, you’ll design lighting plots, hang and focus fixtures, run audio boards, manage mic plots, mix shows, support special events, and partner with directors and stage management. You’ll work events ranging from theater shows to color war reveals and dance parties. Many co-ed residential camps maintain pro-grade sound and lighting rigs, giving techs a real production environment to work in throughout the summer.
What does a sound and lighting tech at summer camp do?You’ll design lighting, run audio boards, manage mics, and mix shows while supporting theater and special events. Most sleepaway camps with theater programs run multiple productions throughout the summer camp season.
What background works best for these jobs at sleepaway camps?Theater tech, live audio, or AV engineering experience are all great fits. Proficiency on ETC consoles, Yamaha or Allen & Heath audio boards, and basic patch work matters most at residential camps with serious tech programs.
Do summer camps have professional rigs?Specialty performing arts residential camps often maintain pro-grade lighting rigs and audio systems with intelligent fixtures, multi-bus consoles, and pro mics. Traditional sleepaway camps may have smaller rigs. Equipment varies by camp.
What does the pay look like for sound and lighting jobs at summer camps?Pay is competitive and commensurate with experience and credentials. Overnight camps include room, board, and laundry alongside salary, which adds meaningful value to the overall summer camp package beyond the base figure.
Is sound and lighting usually combined with other tech roles?Often yes. Many co-ed residential camps blend sound and lighting with set construction, stage management, and AV under unified tech theater programs. Multi-discipline techs are especially valued at sleepaway camps.
