Athletics jobs at summer camps are a perfect fit for coaches, PE teachers, and college athletes who want to spend their summer leading kids through high-energy sports programming. Whether you specialize in one sport or coach across a range of disciplines, summer camp athletics roles let you channel your love of competition, fitness, and team building into an unforgettable season. Sleepaway camps, day camps, and co-ed residential camps all rely on dedicated athletics staff to power the daily schedule.
An athletics staffer at an overnight camp typically coaches drills, runs games, organizes inter-camp tournaments, and supports broader athletic events like color war, Olympics days, and championship cookouts. Many residential camps assign athletics staff to a specialty (basketball, soccer, lacrosse, tennis, etc.) while also rotating through general sports periods. If you’re competitive, energetic, and great with kids, athletics is one of the most active and rewarding camp jobs you can take on.
What does an athletics counselor at summer camp do?
You’ll coach across one or more sports, plan practices, run games and tournaments, and support major athletic events at the camp. Most overnight camps schedule athletics into daily rotations and special programming throughout the summer.
What background works best for athletics jobs at sleepaway camps?
Collegiate playing experience, high school coaching, PE teaching, or strong recreational coaching backgrounds are all great fits. Camps especially value coaches who can teach skills in multiple sports rather than just one.
Do I need to specialize in one sport?
Not necessarily. Many co-ed residential camps look for multi-sport athletics staff who can teach soccer, basketball, lacrosse, baseball, and more. Specialists are also welcome, especially at sports-focused sleepaway camps.
What does the pay look like for athletics jobs at summer camps?
Pay is competitive and commensurate with experience and coaching credentials. Sleepaway camps include room, board, and laundry in addition to salary, which makes the overall summer camp package significantly more valuable than the base figure suggests.
Can current college athletes coach at summer camps?
Yes — many overnight camps actively recruit current college athletes. Just make sure to check NIL and NCAA compliance with your athletic department before accepting a paid summer camp coaching role.
