Art jobs at summer camps are some of the most beloved roles in the camp world — and for good reason. The art studio is often where campers discover hidden talents, find creative confidence, and produce keepsakes they’ll cherish for years. Whether you teach painting, drawing, sculpture, printmaking, or mixed media at a traditional sleepaway camp or a fine-arts-focused residential program, art instructors get to spend the summer surrounded by color, creativity, and curious young artists.
As an art instructor at an overnight camp, you’ll plan daily lessons across multiple media, manage studio supplies, lead group projects, and support campers through individual creative goals. Many co-ed camps run robust visual arts programs that include weekly themes, gallery showcases, and collaborations with photography, ceramics, or theater departments. If you have a fine arts background and love mentoring young creators, this is a deeply fulfilling way to spend the summer.
What does an art instructor at summer camp do?
You’ll plan and lead lessons across various media, manage studio supplies, support individual camper projects, and contribute to camp-wide art events. Daily instruction spans drawing, painting, sculpture, and mixed media at most sleepaway camps.
What background works best for summer camp art jobs?
Fine arts, illustration, or art education degrees are ideal, along with prior teaching or studio experience. Working artists, art teachers, and graduate students all fit naturally into art roles at residential camps.
Do summer camps provide all the art supplies?
Yes — overnight camps almost always stock the studio with paint, paper, brushes, clay, and other essentials. Instructors usually get a supply budget for specialty materials and are often consulted on what to order in the off-season.
What does the pay look like for art jobs at summer camps?
Pay is competitive and commensurate with experience and credentials. Sleepaway camps include room, board, and laundry in addition to salary, which makes the overall summer camp package significantly more valuable than the base salary alone.
Are art jobs at sleepaway camps usually full-summer?
Most are full-season roles of 7–9 weeks. Some specialty fine-arts residential camps offer shorter session-based contracts. Always confirm dates and curriculum expectations in your interview.
