While working at Camp Pemigewassett, staff members take on real responsibility and lead in meaningful ways every day. Through hands-on experience and intentional training, they grow into confident, capable role models while building practical skills that strengthen future college, employment, and career opportunities.
Pemi staff develop highly transferable skills through daily leadership opportunities and ongoing mentorship. They lead activities, guide cabin groups, and support camp programs while gaining direct experience in initiative, teamwork, communication, and problem-solving. These experiences give staff concrete examples of leadership they can confidently articulate in future academic and professional settings.
Staff members strengthen their communication skills by giving clear instructions, speaking to large groups, and offering thoughtful feedback. They build collaboration and conflict-management skills by working closely with campers and fellow staff, helping boys navigate challenges while modeling positive behavior. Along the way, they develop confidence, patience, and sound judgment.
At Pemi, staff members use critical thinking and creativity every day. They assess camper needs, adapt plans to changing conditions, and create engaging solutions when challenges arise. Whether modifying activities for different skill levels or turning rainy days into memorable experiences, they learn to stay flexible, resourceful, and innovative.
Each staff member works closely with an experienced mentor throughout the summer. Early conversations focus on personal goals and expectations, while mid-season check-ins provide constructive feedback and support based on observations from senior staff. These ongoing conversations encourage continuous growth and help staff make the most of their summer experience.
During the final week of camp, Director Ken Moore meets individually with every staff member to reflect on the season and gather feedback. Camp Pemigewassett fosters open, supportive communication, and its mentoring system ensures that every staff member feels heard, supported, and prepared to leave the summer with confidence and a strong sense of accomplishment.

More About Camp Pemigewassett
Camp Pemigewassett is an all-boys overnight camp located on the shores of Lower Baker Pond in central New Hampshire, offering a classic New England camp experience rooted in tradition and purpose. Since its founding, Pemi has focused on helping boys grow into confident, capable young people by emphasizing character, responsibility, and respect for others. Camp life is intentionally structured to encourage independence while providing the support boys need to feel secure, challenged, and valued.
At the heart of Pemi’s philosophy is the belief that boys thrive when they are known, supported, and encouraged to be themselves. Campers live, learn, and grow within small cabin groups that foster strong friendships and a true sense of belonging. Through shared routines, camp traditions, and daily responsibilities, boys learn cooperation, accountability, and the importance of contributing to a community larger than themselves.
Pemi’s lakeside campus provides an ideal setting for both adventure and reflection. Campers enjoy comfortable cabins, expansive athletic fields, courts, creative arts spaces, and a fully equipped waterfront on Lower Baker Pond. The balanced daily program blends sports, outdoor pursuits, and creative activities, giving campers the freedom to explore new interests, develop skills, and discover personal strengths in a supportive environment.
What truly sets Camp Pemigewassett apart is its emphasis on relationships and personal growth over competition or pressure. Campers are encouraged to challenge themselves at their own pace, support one another, and build friendships that often last well beyond the summer. The result is a warm, inclusive camp culture where boys gain confidence, resilience, and a lifelong connection to camp.
Camp Highlights
- Founded in 1908, Pemi is the oldest sleepaway boys' camp in the country still owned and managed by its founding families. Now in its fourth generation of leadership, the camp maintains a deep commitment to its original mission of character development.
- Pemi is the sole resident on Lower Baker Pond. This exclusive access ensures a safe and private environment for swimming, sailing, and waterskiing, entirely free from public jet skis or party boats.
- The program isn't just about play; it offers professional-level instruction from beginner to advanced levels in Athletics, Water Sports, Nature Studies, and Creative Arts (including a renowned woodshop and art studio).
- Pemi is a tech-free community. By leaving electronic devices at home, boys are encouraged to escape the pressures of social media and build deeper, more authentic face-to-face relationships with their peers and mentors.
- Leveraging its location at the edge of the White Mountain National Forest, Pemi offers a progressive outdoor trip program. Campers advance from cabin overnights on "Pemi Hill" to legendary day-hikes and capstone canoe expeditions on Maine’s Allagash Waterway.
