Camp Pemigewassett (Pemi), a summer camp for boys ages 8-15 is seeking a Head of
Woodshop. The ideal candidate is an enthusiastic supporter of the creative process who is
eager to be part of our vibrant summer community. Candidates should have experience in
a woodshop working with basic hand tools, and preferably has worked with children
before.
Founded in 1908, Pemi is the oldest residential boys camp in the country under the same
continuous family ownership and management. Pemi offers a 7-week season and two
3.5-week sessions with a wide-ranging curriculum, including all athletics, water sports,
trips, nature, music, arts, and drama. Camp occupies a beautiful 600-acre site on the
shores of Lower Baker Pond in the White Mountain Region of New Hampshire, about 25
miles northeast of Hanover, New Hampshire.
The Woodshop Program’s objectives include teaching boys the basics of wood shop,
including the safe and proper use of hand tools, how to build basic wood projects from
scratch, to familiarize campers with different types of wood and to experience creativity
and artistry in the wood shop. The Woodshop Program at Pemi offers several weekly
activities based on 5-6 day lesson plans, augmented by focused afternoon workshops (2-3
per week), and “open woodshop” sessions (most afternoons).
The Head of Woodshop will:
- Coordinate activity offerings each week with the Head of Program
- Guide 2-4 counselors who help in the Woodshop; assist with their lesson plans;
work with their schedules to determine weekly offerings, oversee and mentor as
needed. - Teach a range of activities per day and/or teach afternoon workshops and/or
oversee open shop. - Maintain supplies and order supplies in a timely manner
- Keep Woodshop building in good order
- Contribute to the End of Year Art Show
- Oversee camper recognition and special awards for Woodshop activities
All meals are included. Most staff live on-site with various housing options available,
depending on several factors. If you have a family, we invite them to be part of the camp
community as well, and if you have camp-aged sons, a huge benefit is that they will be
able to attend camp for a nominal fee.
