Camp Lohikan

My child had a wonderful time at this camp and will return next year. If you want your kids to have the traditional camp experience (lake activities, talent shows, singing, etc.), this place is great. Children are asked to care for each other, take age-appropriate responsibility, and enjoy sports, crafts, and socializing without any electronics.

I absolutely love Camp Lohikan. The counselors are hella chill, and there is a ton of cool stuff here. I usually chill at the skate park or go to the lake. The evening activities are kind of cringey but you can tell that they’re trying. Mark Buynak is kind of intense but besides that it’s a great environment. Shields is also really great.

Three of my daughter’s favorite activities was going to Dorney Park, a nearby water park, and participating in Spy Camp, where she learned Morse Code, and taking Circus classes. This was her first sleepaway camp experience, and she became close with all 6 girls in her cabin, and stays in touch with them all year. This winter, she begged me to let her go for 8 weeks, but we compromised at 4 weeks. She can’t wait to go horseback riding, jet skiing, climbing up the iceberg in the lake and swinging on the rope swing, performing in the play, doing arts & crafts, and making friends from all over the country. Lohikan was truly a spectacular first sleepaway camp experience…this 8-year-old was not homesick for ONE single day!

Our son attended Lohikan for two weeks last summer and absolutely LOVED it! It was his first sleep-away experience and he actually went through a little “summertime sadness” when he came home. He made friends for life and cannot wait to go back this summer again. The only thing that would be helpful for parents is to understand a little better that just sending money for the camp store is not enough, there wasn’t enough of the comforts of home there, so my son wished we sent packages of goodies and we didn’t know to do that. But overall it was an amazing experience and he ca’t wait to return this year! The transportation counselors to/ from the airport is also highly recommended and reliable!

My 12 year old son has attended Camp Lohikan the last two summers. Each summer was magical. He was exposed to new activities that he loved and helped him gain confidence to try new things. He got to really connect to very nice kids from all over the world. The staff was all very warm and friendly and fun. Each year he had excellent counselors who really got him as a person and made him feel special. I just signed him up for next summer!

My daughter, Maddy, attended the one-week mini camp at Lohikan last summer. She absolutely loved it! Her favorite part was getting to choose all of her activities and the amazing friends that she made there. She tried so many new things, including the flying trapeze! My daughter loves performing arts but wanted to attend a camp with a friend who enjoys sports. Camp Lohikan really does an incredible job offering a wide variety for every possible interest. Maddy adored her counsellors and said they were great role models and the nicest people she’s ever met. She talks about camp non-stop and has been counting the days until she goes back this summer! Also, I found the camp to be very responsive to my questions before and during camp. If you’re on the fence, I recommend checking out their Open House in the spring. 🙂

It takes a lot of people skills to work here. The learn a lot from the kids, and the kids learn a lot from you. There are times when you might think, “Why am I working here? I wanna go home! This place is insane!” but that’s all really part of the experience. As soon as you learn to take a step back and breathe, you can handle anything being a camp counselor may throw at you. I was a camper for 2 years, a CIT for another 2 years, and about start my first summer as a full counselor. Every summer I felt I’ve grown as a person and I hope I continue to do so.

Beautiful countryside setting, well maintained property, huge amount of activities, and the best staff…..we scored a home run by sending our only child here three years ago. He’s come home from camp learning new things (not just activities) but life skills and confidence in himself`. He’s made some great friends from around the world and quite simply blossomed this past summer. His cabin counselors are fantastic and the Lohikan staff are very honorable and sincere. My boy loves it here and as a parent, I’m pretty darn happy and comfortable sending him here. I know he’s well looked after and happy with so many activities to choose from. Looking forward to summer #4.

Camp Lohikan was my daughter’s first sleep-away camp experience. She went for two weeks in 2015, and absolutely loved the experience. The campers and staff made her feel at home, and she is eager to go back. There is a wide array of activities for the kids to do, and she didn’t miss any of the normal comforts of home (TV, electronics, etc). The camp set her up with several pen pals before she went so she already had some friends on arrival, and they have continued to keep in touch afterwards.

This will be my 5th year working at Camp Lohikan. I have to say that from the moment that I was hired to work here the staff made me feel right at home. This place has now become my home away from home. I have met some of the greatest individuals that remain awesome friends even across oceans. The experience of working with so many people from all over the world is probably only matched by the cruise-line industry. In my time at Lohikan I have grown as both and individual and a professional . I have learned skills, techniques and philosophies from the most random of wise minds. If you are wanting to break out and be free in an environment that is loving and open to various cultures this is the place to do it. THAT BEING SAID- I wont say that the entire summer is all peaches and cream. There will be times where you say “why am I here?”. You will be Hot, You will be tired, you will be mad, sad,an angry. That’s ALL a part of working somewhere. Anytime you take 700+ people and keep them in ONE area emotions can be tense. Yes people come and have a bad time…Unfortunately, not everything is for everyone. Working at a summer camp is hard work. – IT BUILDS CHARACTER!!! 🙂 I tell new staff this every year ” The summer is what you make it” On one hand- If you come looking for a good time, wanting to make friends and open to experiencing new things—you’ll have a blast!. On the other hand- If you come with a negative attitude…. you’ll have a negative summer. In an environment such as camp, an upbeat demeanor really makes all the difference. HAPPY STAFF= HAPPY CAMPERS 🙂 If you can push through the lack of electronics and a bit of sweat on your brow, you are in for a summer filled with the craziest memories. Each day that I wake up at camp I can trust I’m in for something crazy in my day. Whether its TACO TUESDAYS or a crazy skit written by a bunch of campers. This place has it all.

Both of my children, a 13-year old girl, and an 11-year old boy, have gone to Camp Lohikan for two summers in a row, and I’ve already signed them up for 2016. They LOVE it. It’s a very impressive camp. It’s not one of those really fancy camps, where the kids have expensive clothes and the girls always have makeup on, but it’s got a staggering number of activities — more than 65, from the standards (archery, lakefront, ATVs, gaga) to the more obscure (geocaching?). The children over a certain age get to choose their activities every day, and can vary their schedules each morning if they are in the mood to do something different. My son was 9 when he first went there, and he felt so comfortable. He’s not a super-confident kid, so it was an amazing experience for him. We have the utmost confidence in the camp staff, and would not hesitate to recommend it to anyone looking for a co-ed camp.

Being a division director was an amazing experience! I have worked at a few camps over the years and I love the experiences and people I meet. Camp Lohikan was another amazing experience! Camp Lohikan hires well rounded individuals with a wide range of skills and most importantly a heart to work with children. I would recommend this camp for both campers looking for a fun filled summer and young adults looking for experiences that will change their lives!

I was a camp councilor here in 2011. I really enjoyed my experience as a councilor and was able to learn so much from the girls in my cabin and about myself. I made lasting memories and life skills such as mentoring, supervising, and teaching that I still hold today. Great friends and a challenging environment made my summer working at Lohikan success!

I tell everyone that they need to be a sleep-away camp counselor at least once in their life. At Lohikan, you get one of the largest groups of staff members from diverse geographic areas and with a wide range of interests. The relationships built with fellow staff members are ones that will last a lifetime. Additionally, unlike most camps where all counselors follow around their cabin, Lohikan allows you to live with the campers while being an instructor at your activity of expertise during the day- best of both worlds!

Camp Lohikan is the BEST camp in the poconos. I sent my two oldest sons this summer and it was an experience of a lifetime. From the administration to the staff we were given the royal treatment just like every other camper. My boys are 11 and 8 and had the time of their lives. My 11 year old was in the intermediates and loved the ability to choose what he wanted to do every day. He got high quality instruction in his favorite sports including personalized workout sessions to keep him in shape for the competitive sports he plays during the year. My 8 year old loved his cabin mates and his counselors. The junior program is great for younger kids because it gives them structure and helps build social skills with their cabin mates. We have two more boys and we plan on sending them in the next few years. Our boys will be back at Lohikan for years to come. This is by far the best camp in the poconos and we checked out many and Lohikan surpassed them all!!!

Camp Lohikan is a great camp for several reasons. I will highlight one of the first things that came to mind. Many summer camps require a child do to certain activities that they may not even be interested in doing. Because of Camp Lohikan’s “elective” system, campers are able to create their own schedule that allows them to spend their days doing things they enjoy or trying new things that they may have never done before. Having the ability to choose and make decisions on their own is allowing a child to practice making positive choices in a safe environment, where when faced with difficult decisions or choices later on, they may feel more comfortable and empowered to do so. Camp Lohikan has so much to offer, including a management team that truely cares about creating a positive experience for children…it is well worth your money!
