Pierce Camp Birchmont is currently recruiting a Waterfront Director to jointly lead and manage our extensive water-based program at our residential summer camp, located on beautiful Lake Wentworth, Wolfeboro NH. We are hiring for our summer season (June 15th to August 15th), with the anticipation of the candidate being a long-term part of our seasonal staff.
Overview:
As Director, you have joint responsibility (with one other Director) for each component of camp’s waterfront program, facility and equipment.
Our waterfront program comprises a swim area of approximately 2000 square feet, home to our instructional swim and junior lifeguard program, and an activity suite which includes sailing, kayaking, canoeing, paddle-boarding, water-skiing, wakeboarding and tubing.
You will also function as part of the wider camp leadership team, acting as a liaison between campers, staff and the camp administrative team.
The ideal candidate will be experience in running a varied water-based activity program, be highly organized, a strong and confident communicator, and has experience directly managing and supervising teams of up to 20 staff.
Responsibilities:
- Prepare and deliver an appropriate waterfront orientation program following American Red Cross and American Camp Association guidelines
- Implement an age-appropriate program which will advance campers’ abilities in swimming and related activities, fostering an environment of fun, development and a healthy respect for the water
- Administer appropriate Red Cross swimming tests
- Prepare campers for canoe and whitewater rafting trips
- Manage a team of lifeguards, including setting rotas, completing staff evaluations, and managing use of camp’s fleet of watercraft
- Maintenance and care of all equipment and facilities in the activity area
- Involvement in wider camp leadership activities and responsibilities as required
Qualifications
- Extensive experience directing a water-based activity program, ideally in a residential or day-camp environment, to include open-water.
- Experience of boat driving, including maintenance, training and operation
- Experience with one or more supplementary water-based activities (sailing, canoeing, kayaking etc.)
- WSI Certification
- LGI Certification
- American Red Cross First-Aid, CPR, AED
- Current Boating License
Where a candidate has suitable experience but is lacking in certification, Birchmont are willing to support candidates through the appropriate certification as required.
Life at Birchmont:
We are a traditional, residential summer camp, so the expectation is that the chosen candidate would live on-site for the duration of our summer program (June 15th – August 15th). Housing, meals and laundry are all provided in addition to the stated salary and training costs. Travel subsidies are also available for staff coming from out-of-state.
The position would be ideally suited to someone with camp age children (7-15), for whom tuition is heavily subsidized. The position may also suit a couple – and we are open to discussions about either suitable positions or remote-working on-site for partners of staff members.
Pay: $2,500.00 – $3,000.00 per month
