General Counselors are the heart of Watitoh. They spend their day overseeing the general care
and well-being of 10-12 campers all of whom are the same age or grade. During the typical day,
they are responsible for getting their campers to program areas, participating in these activities
and overseeing the emotional & physical well-being of campers (ex: check ins, problem-solving,
relationship building) throughout the day. They bring any major problems to their respective
Head Counselor. This is the ideal job for someone who is looking to gain skills in working with
children, organization, child-development, outdoor education, recreation, social work, and
classroom teaching.
The ideal General Counselor has completed at least one year of college or the equivalent there-
of, has high energy, is a team player, works well with co-counselors and Head Counselors, has
good communication skills, accepts feedback, and seeks out information. While all counselors
are role models for our campers, the general counselor is with their cabin the entire day and has
the highest impact on the behavior of their campers. They work in collaboration with co-
counselors who are specialists during the day, teaching at an activity.
All bunk counselors are “OD” (on duty) two to three times a week at night. During these nights
counselors are assigned a bunk (sometimes their own) to get campers ready for bed, ensure
they are getting to sleep at an age appropriate time, and are safe.
Some educational institutions require prior approval before starting internships. It is the
student’s responsibility to check with their institution to be sure their position meets any
requirements before they accept a position.
