Activity Counselors at Laurel have a dual role at camp, combining the responsibilities of a cabin counselor with coaching or instruction in a specific athletic program area.
During the morning, you’ll start the day with your cabin of campers, helping with wake-up, breakfast, clean-up, and the daily routine. Once activities begin, you’ll report to your assigned program area, where you’ll spend much of the day teaching, coaching, and encouraging campers as they build their skills and confidence.
Our athletic counselors work with campers ages 7–15 and should have a strong background in at least one sport or activity area. You do not need to be a professional coach, but you should be comfortable demonstrating skills, explaining fundamentals, leading drills and games, and adapting instruction for campers with different ability levels.
Throughout the day, you’ll also reconnect with your cabin for meals, special events, evening activities, and other parts of camp life. This combination gives Activity Counselors the “best of both worlds”: the chance to spend the day teaching something they care about while still building close relationships with a group of campers.
Responsibilities
- Teach and coach campers in your assigned athletic area
- Plan and lead drills, games, skill-building activities, and friendly competition
- Adjust instruction for different ages and experience levels
- Encourage sportsmanship, confidence, effort, and teamwork
- Help maintain equipment and keep activity areas organized and safe
- Work with your Department Head and Program Area Director to support a strong daily program
- Live in a cabin with campers and help with their daily routine
- Supervise campers during meals, transitions, evening programs, and special events
- Serve as a positive role model throughout the camp day
What we’re looking for
We’re looking for staff who bring energy, patience, and a genuine interest in working with kids. Strong candidates will have experience playing, coaching, or teaching in at least one of our athletic areas and will be comfortable taking responsibility both on the field and in the cabin.
You should be ready for an active summer, long days, and a role that requires you to be engaged with campers throughout the day.
Some activity areas may require additional certifications or training depending on the sport or program.
Why work as an Athletics Counselor?
This role gives you the opportunity to spend your summer coaching a sport you enjoy while gaining hands-on experience in leadership, teaching, communication, and youth development. You’ll become part of both an athletic department and a cabin community, giving you the chance to make an impact in more than one part of camp life.
