Frequently Asked Questions
Working at an overnight camp means becoming part of the community, not simply showing up for a shift. Staff eat meals with campers, lead activities, help with cabin routines, participate in evening programs and special events, and spend the summer surrounded by other young adults doing the same.
Berkshire Trails brings together domestic and international staff with different backgrounds, experiences, and interests. For many staff members, that community becomes one of the most rewarding parts of the summer.
With over 50 camper activities across athletics, waterfront, adventure, arts, tech, and performing arts, Berkshire Trails hires staff with diverse skills.Opportunities include coaching sports, water activities, climbing, arts, crafts, STEM, and performing arts. Expert knowledge in all areas is not required—camps value unique skills, interests, and strengths.
Most camper-facing staff at an overnight camp live on site for the summer, and cabin counselors live alongside campers as part of the bunk community. That means counselors are there for much more than scheduled activities. They help campers navigate daily routines, friendships, homesickness, meals, downtime, and life away from home.
Living at camp also means staff spend the summer alongside coworkers from around the country and around the world, making Berkshire Trails both a job and a residential community.
Berkshire Trails staff complete pre-camp training before campers arrive. Training covers areas including child development, camper safety, activity instruction, teamwork, and leadership so staff are prepared for both their individual responsibilities and the realities of living and working with children at overnight camp.
Camp is a particularly strong summer job for college students and young adults who want practical experience working with people. Staff regularly practice leadership, communication, conflict resolution, adaptability, teamwork, and problem-solving while taking real responsibility for campers and programs.
Those skills can translate well to future work in education, coaching, recreation, psychology, social work, health care, communications, business, and many other fields. Just as importantly, camp gives staff the opportunity to spend a summer working closely with people from different backgrounds while doing work that directly affects kids.
Berkshire Trails is located in Great Barrington, Massachusetts, in the Berkshire Mountains of Western Massachusetts. The camp property includes a waterfront, athletic fields and courts, an indoor fieldhouse, adventure facilities, arts spaces, and other program areas where staff spend their summer teaching and working with campers.
Berkshire Trails looks for staff members who enjoy working with children and are ready to be active participants in camp life. Strong candidates are responsible, energetic, flexible, willing to work as part of a team, and excited to share their skills and interests with campers.
Experience in sports, aquatics, outdoor adventure, arts, media, performing arts, or other camp activities can make an applicant especially valuable, but enthusiasm for working with kids remains one of the most important qualifications.
